Biodiversity & Environmental Policies and Standards

Responsible Chemical Use
Brackley Town Council has made significant reductions in chemical usage over recent years, with glyphosate-based weed killers now only used in exceptional cases, such as controlling invasive Hogweed, where no other effective treatment exists. By limiting chemical use wherever possible, the council not only reduces its environmental footprint but also helps safeguard wildlife, pollinators, and the health of residents and staff.
Tree Management Standards
The council takes a proactive and careful approach to tree management across Brackley. All trees are regularly monitored to maintain their health, safety, and resilience. Standard management practices include selective thinning, crown reduction, and pollarding where appropriate. Where trees are affected by disease and need to be felled, efforts are made to retain standing dead wood where safe, providing valuable habitat for wildlife and allowing natural decay processes to support biodiversity.
Habitat and Biodiversity Enhancement
All council operations aim to enhance habitat and biodiversity wherever possible. This includes creating and maintaining wildflower meadows, planting trees and hedges, supporting wildlife corridors, and leaving areas of long grass to encourage pollinators and small mammals. Standard practices are guided by both environmental legislation and the council’s own Biodiversity and Environment Action Plan, ensuring that every project considers sustainability and the long-term health of Brackley’s natural environment.
Supporting Community and Education
Brackley Town Council also integrates education and community involvement into its environmental standards. Schools, community groups, and residents are encouraged to participate in planting projects, wildlife initiatives, and biodiversity activities. By fostering understanding and engagement, the council ensures that its environmental efforts extend beyond council-managed land and contribute to a broader culture of care for the natural environment.

Policies
Brackley Town Council’s environmental standards are supported by formal policies, which provide clear guidance for staff and councillors and help ensure the consistent, responsible management of the town’s green spaces. Key documents include the Tree Management Policy and the Biodiversity & Environmental Policy, which outline practical approaches to maintaining trees, habitats, and open spaces while supporting biodiversity and sustainability.
For more detail on the council’s official environmental approach, visit the Policies page under the heading Services and Community. Here, residents can explore these policies and learn more about how Brackley Town Council manages its green spaces, trees, and wildlife habitats responsibly.
The council continues to develop additional Biodiversity & Environment policies over time, ensuring that its environmental standards evolve to reflect best practice and support ongoing efforts to protect and enhance Brackley’s natural environment for the benefit of residents, wildlife, and future generations.
